Step 1
Buy the necessary items for the roast. Most commonly this will include hot dogs, veggie dogs (if there are any vegetarians to be there), hot dog buns, chips, large marshmallows, chocolate bars, graham crackers, drinks and ice. Paper plates are not necessary since many people eat their items one at a time after it cooks. Be sure to buy extra because there are always casualties that fall off into the fire.
Step 2
Pick out a location for the fire pit. This should be on a surface that is free of grass and flammable debris. If one has to be made, rake the area free of grass and break up soil. Outline the area with large rocks
Step 3
Gather wood for the fire. If you live in or near a wooded area just simply collect limbs that have fallen to the ground. Dry wood will burn easier and faster. Freshly cut wood will be hard to burn. If you do not have access to a wooded area, try buying some seasoned campfire wood. This can be easily found near areas that have campsites.
Step 4
Stack the limbs and wood in a small bonfire manner. Refrain from making a huge bonfire because people will need to be able to get fairly close to the fire. Leave some wood for adding on the fire after it gets going and burns down some. Want to make sure the fire last for the smores!
Step 5
Make sticks to cook the food on. These will be made out of fresh tree limbs. Pick these from hardwood trees such as hickory, beech or oak trees. Avoid pine and cedar trees, these are to soft and will flavor your food items something horrible. The stick should be around a yard and a half. Using caution and a knife carve the bark off the stick. Go up a bit longer than the hot dogs are. Make a point on the end of the stick. Double ended limbs are perfect for cooking two hot dogs at a time!
Step 6
If your fire area is not near a reliable source of water, prepare buckets of water in the event the fire gets out of hand. A shovel should be near by as well.
Step 7
Don't forget a lighter or matches. You should also bring a small bit of dye free paper or a fire starter log to get the fire rolling.
Step 8
Place chairs all around the fire pit at a safe distance.
Step 9
Set up a table with all the supplies and put the drinks on ice.
Step 10
Start the fire and wait until it's burning at a steady, yet predicable pace before allowing people to roast their hot dogs. Add wood as necessary to keep the fire going at a stable pace.
Step 11
Once everyone is done eating, it's fun to sit around the fire as it dies down and tell stories.
Step 12
Upon calling it a night make sure the fire is completely out. Pour water onto the fire, stir it with the shovel and repeat. Throw dirt or rocks on top just to make sure.
